Want to reduce your waistline? Cut the clutter from your life!

by 1 May 2017 Nathalie Ricaud Leave a Comment

Trying to reduce your waistline but not making much progress?  The answer might well be to cut the clutter from your life and get organised!  Yes really!

Cut the Clutter, Not Your Calories

Kitchen clutter

Whether you are a stay-at-home or working mother, it can be a challenge to put a meal on the table at a given time every night.  Even more so if you have little or no space at all on your countertops to prep your food or if you struggle to find the utensils you need in your cabinets.  My mum has so much kitchenware and utensils that every time she wants to take something out, she has to move a few things around.  Granted, she’s retired and has all the time she needs in her hands, but not all of us have this luxury, right?

How can the kitchen clutter impact your waistline?

If your kitchen is cluttered, the idea of cooking even a simple meal can be overwhelming.  You end up eating out or bringing home takeaway food more frequently than you should. This means having bigger portions of food loaded with higher fat and sugar than what you would have cooked at home.

Dining table clutter

I often see dining tables covered with mail, newspapers, kids’ homework, craft projects and the like.  But these things don’t belong there, do they?  They prevent you from sitting down and having your meals at the table.

You end up eating on the couch, very likely in front of the TV.  It then becomes difficult to convince yourself to spend time cooking nutritious food when nobody really pays attention to what they eat!  Very quickly, you don’t see the point of eating at regular hours and with the rest of the family.  You rush through your food without paying attention to how much you eat.

Wardrobe clutter

A wardrobe overstuffed with clothes makes it difficult to find what you need when you need it.

If you waste time looking for your sports gear when you are due for a class, or can’t find your runners, you’ll quickly abandon the idea and lay on your couch instead of burning some calories…

I have no scientific evidence to prove it, but two clients of mine who had been trying to lose weight for a while started losing weight after we had cut the clutter in their wardrobes.  I wouldn’t attribute it to the intense workout that we had decluttering their wardrobe!  But it might well be because having a wardrobe made of clothes that don’t fit you and that is a nagging reminder of the weight that you can’t seem to lose paralyse you.  On the other hand, having a wardrobe that makes you feel good about yourself boosts your self-esteem and gives you the energy to embrace your life.

Ready for a gentle way to start letting go of clothes that no longer fit your life? My free Quick Wardrobe Fix guide gives you simple, actionable steps to declutter with confidence.

Mind clutter

Cluttered homes often rhyme with cluttered minds.  When you are surrounded by clutter, it makes it hard to stop thinking about it. It also makes you feel guilty about what you should do about it.  It reaches a point when you don’t own your stuff, your stuff owns you.

The time you spend looking after too many possessions and the mental energy you put into thinking about them deprives you of time and energy. They could be used for something that would be more beneficial to you. For example, exercising, planning healthy meals, or just spending time with your loved ones.
