Drowning In Clutter? 8 ‘No-Brainer’ Items To Ditch Today!

by 30 April 2025 Nathalie Ricaud Leave a Comment

Do you feel buried under piles of stuff? Does the thought of decluttering your home feel completely overwhelming, leaving you unsure where on earth to even begin? If so, you are not alone.

During a recent event where I was invited to speak on the topic of clutter, a participant asked for quick wins – those immediate decluttering actions that can provide instant results. It was an excellent question, as I know many overwhelmed individuals benefit from these simple, confidence-boosting steps to get started.

That’s why I want to share with you today a list of items I call the ‘no-brainers’ – easy things to declutter that you can often let go of without much deliberation. Getting these out of your space isn’t about achieving perfection overnight; it’s about making progress, creating pockets of calm, and building momentum to tackle more later. Think of it as freeing up physical space and mental energy.

Let’s find your first quick wins! Go and grab a rubbish bag and a donation bag (or box) now, and let’s see what ‘no-brainers’ we can find.

Here are 8 easy things to declutter without thinking twice:

1. Expired (and Unsafe) Items

What they are: This is about health and safety as much as clutter. Look for food hiding at the back of your fridge or pantry that’s past its use-by date, any medicines that have expired and shouldn’t be used, and old toiletries or make-up that have gone off. If you can’t find an expiry date on cosmetics, give them a sniff – if they smell odd or the texture has changed, they’re probably past it.

Ditch expired food and expired medicines

Why they are easy things to declutter: Keeping expired items takes up space and can be risky. They serve no positive purpose. Getting rid of them is a simple, practical step towards a healthier and less cluttered home.

Quick Win: Have a quick rummage through your kitchen, medicine cabinet, and cosmetic bags. Anything clearly expired or suspect? Pop it straight into the rubbish bag. Remember to check local guidelines for safely disposing of old medicines.

2. Unusable Items

What they are: This category includes things that are broken (like a mug with a cracked handle or a toy missing a vital piece) and that you haven’t fixed (and realistically know you won’t). It also covers items that no longer perform their intended function, like dried-up pens and markers, and those mysterious single socks that have lost their partners!

Declutter broken items

Why they are easy things to declutter: Items that don’t work or are incomplete just take up space and add to visual stress. A single sock can’t be worn; a dried pen can’t write. They are just clutter.

Quick Win: Look for anything obviously broken or not working. Gather up those pens and markers and do a quick test – bin the ones that are dry. Find any single socks lurking in your laundry basket or drawers. For broken items you genuinely intend to repair, give yourself a firm deadline – pop them in a ‘to mend’ box with the date. If the date passes, it’s okay to let them go. Anything else broken or solo? Straight into the discard or recycling pile.

3. Containers Without Partners

What they are: This is a classic clutter culprit! It’s the food container bases that don’t have matching lids, and the lids that don’t have matching bases.

Why they are easy things to declutter: A container needs its lid (and vice versa!) to store food properly. Without a partner, they can’t do their main job and just waste valuable cupboard space. While you could reuse lidless containers for sorting small items elsewhere, they’re not serving their primary purpose in the kitchen cupboard.

Quick Win: Head to where you keep your food storage containers. Pull them all out (yes, all of them!). Match up the bases and lids. Any orphans? Into the recycling bin they go! While you’re there, consider if any awkward-shaped ones that never stack neatly are causing more trouble than they’re worth.

Plastic food containers missing their base or lid should be ditched

4. Empty Cardboard Boxes

What they are: Boxes from online deliveries, appliance packaging, and anything else made of cardboard that’s arrived in your home.

Why they are easy things to declutter: Unless you are planning a move imminently, need the original packaging for a valuable item you intend to sell (like electronics), or are keeping specific boxes for storing fragile or awkwardly shaped items, these are just bulky clutter takers. They fill up space quickly.

Quick Win: Round up all those empty cardboard boxes. Unless they fit one of those specific exceptions, break them down flat and get them out for recycling as soon as possible.

5. Excessive Carrier Bags

What they are: The ever-multiplying collection of plastic, paper, or reusable bags from shopping trips.

Why they are easy things to declutter: We all need some carrier bags, but they have a tendency to breed in cupboards and drawers! Keeping more than you realistically need or have space for creates unnecessary clutter and makes it hard to find the bags you actually want to use.

Quick Win: Designate one specific spot or container for your carrier bags. Gather all the bags from around your home and put them only into that designated spot. If they don’t all fit neatly, sort through and keep only the best ones until they do. This gives you a clear limit and stops them taking over.

6. Excess Paper That’s Served Its Purpose

What they are: This includes old newspapers and magazines you’ve already read (unless they’re genuine collector’s items), everyday receipts you don’t need for tax, warranty, or return purposes, and even old instruction manuals for items you no longer own.

Easy things to declutter: excess paper

Why they are easy things to declutter: Paper is a notorious clutter magnet. Once the information is no longer relevant or readily available elsewhere (like manuals online), holding onto it just creates piles and makes it harder to find what you actually need.

Quick Win: Tackle those stacks of old newspapers, magazines, and random receipts. Recycle the papers and magazines. For receipts, if you don’t need them for a specific purpose, shred any with sensitive information and dispose the rest. Found any instruction manuals for old appliances? Out they go! When you get new manuals, consider just keeping the section in your language or finding a digital version online.

7. Kids’ Outgrown Items

What they are: Clothes your children have physically grown out of, and toys that are clearly too young for them, without any younger siblings to hand them down to.

Easy things to declutter: kids' outgrown clothes and toys

Why they are easy things to declutter: Children grow fast! Keeping items they can no longer wear or play with is storing clutter for no current or immediate future use. While sentimental items are different, clothes and basic toys that are simply too small or too young are candidates for moving on.

Quick Win: Go through your children’s clothes and toy storage with them (if age-appropriate). Bag up anything that is clearly too small or no longer played with. If they are in good condition, get them ready for donation or selling. If you want to keep a very select few items for sentimental reasons, designate a special memorabilia box for them so they don’t add to the everyday clutter.

Planning to keep some clothes that your child has outgrown to pass them on to her younger siblings? Here are six easy steps to organise hand-me-downs.

8. Wire Hangers

What they are: Those thin metal hangers you often get from dry cleaners.

Why they are easy things to declutter: Wire hangers snag clothes, lose their shape, and tangle together creating chaos in your wardrobe. They make it harder to access your clothes and contribute to a feeling of disorganisation.

Quick Win: Head to your wardrobe and pull out every single wire hanger you find. Consider investing in some matching hangers, like velvet or sturdy plastic or wooden ones – it instantly creates a calmer, more streamlined wardrobe!

Dedicate just 15-30 minutes to one or two categories from this list today. Block the time out in your schedule if needed – making the appointment with yourself makes it more likely to happen! Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. Every item you let go of frees up space and lightens your mental load.
