Clutter is more than just the “stuff” you can see. If you feel constantly overwhelmed, it helps to look at the hidden layers – like digital mess, a packed schedule, and mental noise. Discover how to deal with clutter using a “Good Enough” approach that focuses on your energy rather than perfection.
What Type of Clutterer Are You?
Since I started working as a professional organiser in 2013, I have seen clutter in various shapes and sizes, I have heard countless stories about how the clutter had formed and about the struggles to let go of it, I have witnessed the toll the clutter was taking on my clients and their families, and all the range of feelings and emotions associated with it. Here are the 5 most common clutterer personality types I work with.
We’re breeding clutter. How did we get to that point?
Let’s face it, we’re drowning in clutter. We have so much stuff in our homes that more and more people resort to storing their excess outside of their homes, in self-storage boxes. The self-storage industry in Singapore has grown from 1 facility in 2003 to almost 100 in recent years! In the US, it is estimated that 1 out of 10 households owns a storage unit. And this situation doesn’t touch only wealthy people, in fact, even low-income families are faced with clutter in their homes. I’ve been working as a professional organiser since 2013 and here are my views on how we breed clutter.
So you think you’re a hoarder?
TV reality shows such as Hoarding: Buried Alive, Clean House or A&E’s Hoarders have drawn attention to the phenomenon of compulsive hoarding. But while many people admit being cluttered, only a small percentage qualify as compulsive hoarders – based on the number of people I’ve helped over the last 4 years as a professional organiser, I’d say around 5%. Whatever the severity of your clutter is, my view is that you should get professional help. Here’s why.
